As a continuation from the first week I was thrown into the world of the Mumford & Sons’ album: Sign No More.  I must applaud those of you who recommended or agreed to have have me listen to this album for the past week.  I have had a wonderful time getting to know these songs of the upbeat folk rock sound from the Brits.  Wait, what? Brits?  Ya, I know.  I didn’t see it coming either.  It was only after speaking with my friend Nate about them did I realize that they were not in fact good ol’ boys from the south.  They sure fooled me, although after knowing this fact and listening some more, the distinguishing accents came through in their music much more noticeably.  All in all I thought the album proved extremely worthy.  Despite many of their songs sounding similar to one another, I actually found it to be quite satisfying.   It became a record that held the same sound throughout it’s entirety all the while parading distinguishing vocal melodies that make each song memorable.  This has become an album that will be a regular on my iPod and I thank all of you.

So with that said; ON TO WEEK TWO.  I need a new album for this week so let the suggestions start flowing.  What album has been ringing in your ears lately?

  1. I read the first post for Music for Schmucks and may have missed this, but are you only interested in new releases? If you are, The Broken Bells record might be worth looking into. If you are looking for something a little older, The Fleet Foxes album is pretty good.

  2. If you’re not necessarily looking for new releases, I’d recommend Joanna Newsom’s The Milk-Eyed Mender.

  3. If the goal is new and current I think the best I have to follow up is Brothers by the Black Keys. The Black Keys are a really solid band with a pile of high-quality albums that range from the stripped-down blues and funk of The Big Come Up and ThickFreakness to the more polished, Danger Mouse produced Attack and Release.

Starting with Brothers is perfectly fine, but all albums mentioned here are worth loving.

Also, Joanna Newsom is not for everyone (her voice is rather polarizing) but if you can give her a fair chance she will grow on you, and the writing on The Milk-Eyed Mender is some of the best writing I’ve ever heard.

  4. Geez, lots of great recommendations this week.
Stephen-I still need to get into Joanna Newsom myself. In fact, I think this week I will make a point to get into The Milk Eyed Mender.

Jason- The Fleet Foxes album is one of my favorites and just you mentioning it made me relisten to it while writing this comment (specifically Blue Ridge Mountains). My only apprehension would be that it may be too similar to the Mumford & Sons record. Not that they sound the same, but its in the same vein.

Tim- Haven’t gotten into the new Black Keys, but I’ve heard great things. However, Attack & Release is a really great album and they seem to be a consistently great band.

Keeping in mind that all of these would be perfect albums to eventually do for this column, I’m going to vote for Joanna Newsom. Why not shake it up a little bit?!

  5. Tim — her voice totally IS polarizing, I should have said that. I’ll go ahead and say that when I first heard it, I thought it was irritating and pointlessly obtuse. I’ve changed my opinion considerably. Seeing her perform songs from Ys with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra was one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Personal favorite is “Cassiopeia”, but there’s not a weak track on that album.

  6. …on M-EM, I mean.

  7. Wow. I love this. So many choices! This is great. Thanks so much guys.

I am not looking only for new and current albums to fall in love with. Bring me your old, your new, your favorite and your forgotten.

I would really love to hear the fleet foxes, I’ve heard OF them many times. The Black Keys sound super interesting as well. However, it is looking like Joanna Newsom: The Milk Eyed Mender may be the choice this week? We have one suggestion and one confirmed so far. Anyone else?

  8. I didn’t have a chance to post yesterday, but to let you all know the votes are in and Joanna Newsom: the Milk Eyed Mender is it for this week. Can’t wait!

For those of you whose picks didn’t come through try again next week for me! I have a feeling the Black Keys may make another appearance? ;)
