But they should. (Note that if you subscribed to the RSS on my fancy new microblog, you’d have gotten to read this at least two minutes earlier.)
I’ve turned into one of those guys who only listens to new albums by bands he already knows. And it’s a shame. But I happened upon this after getting sucked into a few music blogs — and I really should be sucked in a lot more — and thought it definitely worth sharing.
The name’s Chris Bathgate; his website is here and the My Old Kentucky Blog post about him is here. …Continue reading this entry
On August 25, 2006, my life changed forever. That was the day I was transformed from a young, ignorant, married man expecting his first child into a young, ignorant, married man with a beautiful baby daughter. My entire existence had just shifted, but I had no idea how much. At this moment, I am the proud father of a four year old, a one year old, and a third child due in just over a month, and I cannot imagine my life any other way. As I make this, my maiden voyage into the GRTM community, I would like to pause to reflect on the blessed and weighty fact that as I gather ‘round the mic, I do so as a father of young children. …Continue reading this entry
This has been a great year for music, filled with extraordinary releases from established bands and new artists making huge splashes. And, since there’s nothing we love more than throwing together lists, we of course compiled a collection of our favorite albums of the past 12 months. Contributors started by creating a personal top ten list, which were then plugged into a complex series of algorithms, matrices and other fancy math shit. …Continue reading this entry
The true duty of the critic is to encapsulate a piece of work and the artist for the reader, providing thoughtful and nuanced contextualization. Well, I say fuck that noise. Here, in alphabetical order according to my iTunes library, are some simple, bite-sized, easy to digest equations to guide you through that crazy thing that we call pop music. And they’re all 100% scientifically proven. Just tell me I’m wrong! (Please don’t. I’m very sensitive to criticism of any kind.)

Pequeña Fiera!: Mountains were Monsters
2010, Error! Lo-Fi Recordings
This album is available as a free download here.
I am intrigued by the bigfoot-looking cartoon character on the cover of Pequeña Fiera!’s record, Mountains were Monsters. I’m intrigued because I wonder whether it is the inspiration for this whimsical collection of lo-fi recordings or whether the character was created out of listening to the music. His story certainly seems to be for me the story of this record. …Continue reading this entry
Hello again, and welcome to the Apology Mixtape. Every so often, One of our contributors will let their MP3 player play a few songs on random, and then post them here along with an apology to whomever they see fit, for whatever purpose they see fit. That’s the idea. Enjoy.
Dear Jim Henson,
I’m sorry you’re dead, wherever you are. …Continue reading this entry

Diego Bernal: Besides…
2010, Exponential Records
This album is available as a free download here.
This album just might be the coolest thing I’ve heard all year. This is the kind of music you would imagine rolling through Danny Trejo’s head while he’s walking into the grocery store or something. And yet, despite this “cool” feeling, there’s something warm and familiar about what’s going on here that makes this record special. …Continue reading this entry
Without warning, Girl Talk posted his latest mash-up project for free download here (http://illegal-art.net/allday/) yesterday. It’s about time, too, with 2008′s Feed the Animals having felt pretty stale for a while. Get ready for more genre/decade-spanning party music that makes even the nerdiest among us feel like they could successfully get they’s freak on. The website’s been pretty clogged, but keep at it. …Continue reading this entry
